Markel support Carers week
We held a charity fun day to support Carers week (8th - 15th June) to raise money for our chosen charity Carers Trust.
As this year’s theme was ‘summer fun’, staff came to work dressed for the sunshine and took part in holiday destination quiz and a beach treasure map.
On the day our PMR Manager Liam Greene took on the challenge of cycling over 55 miles from Manchester to Leeds which he completed in a fantastic time and was at his desk by 9am.
With all the fundraising activities combined we raised over £400 for Carers Trust.
Last year we donated just over £17,000 to this worthy cause which was generated by corporate and staff fundraising initiatives, including dress down days, sponsorship and challenges alongside our £1 donation per online policy scheme. The total amount raised since we began our support in 2008 is almost £160,000!
We asked Val Hewison, CEO of Carers Leeds how donations from Markel have benefitted the Leeds Carers centre.
“Markel’s kind donations have paid for coaches to take over 40 carers on day trips, they have helped to keep our support groups going, paid for health and well-being sessions and also helps us keep a small Crisis Fund going in case any carer is in absolute dire straits and an essential service may be at risk.”
Markel donations have also funded 10% of all the grants awarded from the Carers Essentials fund. This provides carers with access to essential household equipment. Even the most basic of household tasks can become harder and more time-consuming when they need to be fitted around a demanding caring role. For those carers who cannot afford the equipment to assist them with these tasks, they become nearly impossible. Grants of up to £400 are available for items such as washing machines, cookers, fridge freezers or beds to help ease some of the stress and exhaustion of caring.
