Markel gives £5,000 triathlon prize to Cancer Support

Markel International, London, 26 June 2012. The Markel Cholmondeley Castle Triathlon, held on Sunday 24 June, defied wind, rain and mud as triathletes from across the country competed in a variety of events in the beautiful grounds of the Cheshire castle. The day included a special charity challenge for relay teams of three, with Markel providing a £5,000 prize for the winning team’s nominated charity along with an iPad for each member of the winning team.

The prize was won by James Nutt, Craig Twigg and Sam Densham, called the Racetime Race Team, who were competing for Macmillan Cancer Support. James completed an 800-metre swim before handing over to Craig for a 40 km cycle followed by Sam on the final leg, the 8 km run. Their winning time was 1 hour and 45 minutes.

The team travelled from Loughborough and hope that the charity prize will go to support Macmillan’s activities in Leicestershire. Commenting on the competition, James said: “We are thrilled to win the Markel prize, especially since the conditions weren’t ideal on Sunday. The bike course was tough and it was a very muddy run, courtesy of our lovely summer weather.”

There are two remaining castle competitions in Markel’s charity challenge - at Castle Howard on 25 July and Hever Castle on 29 September - with a further £5,000 prize at each castle. All entrants must compete for a nominated charity and are encouraged to create an online sponsorship page so that a wide range of charities can benefit from the overall competition.
