Big Night at The Brewery strikes a blow for Barnardo's

Markel International, London, 20 September 2012. Specialist insurer Markel International, in association with Our Time Promotions, is holding a charity boxing evening at The Brewery, City of London, on 27 September.

Entitled 'Big Night at The Brewery' and hosted by Millie Clode, the Sky Sports News presenter, this is the third charity boxing evening that Markel and Our Time Promotions have staged for the London insurance market. Eleven insurance professionals are taking part in the 2012 show, all of whom have trained for many weeks at a London boxing gym.

This year’s principal charity is Barnardo's, which is being supported through fund-raising sponsorship pages set up by the boxers, a big-prize raffle during the show, and various other initiatives that will help to raise many thousands of pounds for the UK's largest children’s charity. Other charities to benefit include Macmillan Cancer Support and MDS UK.

Following the debut of women’s boxing at the Olympics, where Nicola Adams set such an inspiring example, for the first time there will be two women among the eleven insurance contenders. Completing the line-up is a celebrity contender, Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Sam Thomas, who is swapping the racetrack for the boxing ring. He will be raising money for the Injured Jockeys Fund as well as Barnardo's. No stranger to physical sport and sporting injury, Sam has taken many knocks during his gruelling career as a jump jockey and even sustained a broken neck after a heavy fall in 2010.

Commenting on his charity fight, Sam said: “Markel has been sponsoring me for a few years and has supported me through all the knocks I’ve had on the racecourse. So I felt it was time to give a few knocks back by putting on the gloves for two very worthy charities - Barnardo's and the Injured Jockeys Fund. And as I owe a lot to Denman, no surprise that I’m borrowing his nickname for my fight name - "Sam ‘The Tank’ Thomas.”

Apart from Millie Clode and Sam Thomas, star entertainment will be provided by the dance group Spelbound, which won Britain’s got talent in 2010, while Frank Harper and other actors from the recently released gangster film St George’s Day will be ringside. There will also be a sprinkling of other sports stars and actors including the former Olympic trainer Snowy Brooks, who guided Daley Thomson to success, and film heavy Tony Denham.
